Marshall Vernon

Marshall Vernon is a distance runner, currently in his senior year of high school. He has displayed excellent results throughout Rhode Island, regionally, and nationally. Marshall competes for La Salle Academy in Providence RI as a team member of the varsity cross country (2025 co-captain), indoor, and outdoor track teams.
The 2025-2026 Indoor Track season saw Marshall participate in limited competitions due to some nagging injuries. With his sights set perennially high, he competed in the Boston University Terrier Classic Invitational 3k race and set a time of 8:21.69. At the State Championship race, Marshall won both the 3k and 1500 events (but was later DQ'd from the 1500) and came in 5th in the 1k. Despite qualification for the 2-mile race, Marshall was unable to compete at New Balance Nationals Indoors. Marshall is a proud recipient of the Bobby Doyle Foundation college scholarship awarded at the indoor track banquet in March 2026.
For the 2025 Cross Country season, after a calf-strain sidelined him for the prior outdoor track season he rehabilitated himself and in his first XC race of 2025, Marshall set a new course record by 17 seconds at Deerfield Park in Smithfield, RI. As the season progressed, Marshall showed speed winning the RI Class A Championship race. He finished 4th at the State Championships in a time of 15:30.62.
Looking back, Marshall kicked off the 2025 indoor track season with strong performances at the Holiday Challenge event at the TRACK at New Balance with a 4:10 indoor mile. He qualified for the 2025 Millrose Games at the Nike Center for Track and Field at the Armory in NYC with his performance at the Hispanic Games. His Millrose Games mile race performance was hampered by illness but he was greatly honored to be able to participate in one of the most prestigious indoor track events in the world and is grateful for the opportunity. Marshall fought illness into the championship season but was able to pull out a "flu game" performance to secure wins in two RI State Championship events - the 3K and the 1500. Marshall's outdoor track season in 2025 was marred by a recurring calf-strain. He spent the season healing it and going into summer 2025 training with renewed vigor.
Marshall enjoyed an excellent XC season in 2024. He became the individual 2024 Cross Country Rhode Island State Champion on November 2, 2024 (news article) on the classic 5k course at Ponaganset High School in Gloucester, RI with a time of 15:00.75 - the second fastest time ever recorded on the course. On October 26, 2024, Marshall won the RI XC Class A championship race, also at Ponaganset, with a time of 15:29.38 - fastest of the day across all classes. Marshall closed out the season by competing at both NXR at Bowdoin Park in NY and also NXN in Portland, Oregon for the Northeast Region. Marshall was named the RI XC Gatorade Player of the Year for 2025.
Prior Events
At the Loucks Games in White Plains NY on May 11, 2024, Marshall took 5th place in the 3200m final with a time of 9:01.62. On May 3, 2024, he logged a 4:10.6 mile at the Bay State Running Elite Scholastic Mile event in Weston MA. Marshall is the RI 2024 indoor state champion in two events (3k and 1500m) for 2024 in addition to taking 4th in a third event (1k) that day. At the 2024 New England Championships Boys 1 Mile on March 2, 2024, Marshall placed second with a time of 4:16.2
Marshall competed at 2023 Nike Cross Regionals at Bowdoin Park (P14, 16:23, 2nd team all-region), New Balance Outdoor Nationals in 2023 and New Balance Indoor Nationals in 2022. In the 2023 New England Cross Country Championships, he placed 16th overall with a time of 15:57 in a competitive field. Marshall completed the mile in 4:18.02 at the 2024 John Thomas Terrier Invitational collegiate meet at Boston University.

Marshall Vernon maintains an excellent GPA at La Salle Academy, a high school known for producing some of the finest students in Rhode Island. Marshall had the good fortune to meet Noah Lyles at the 2024 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on the same day that Marshall won three events at the RI Class meet and they shared a moment around post-race celebrations.
